Celebrating the Nation’s birth:
Now 250 years old.
Only its inception perhaps
Deserving of brief jubilation.

Now? We know too much.
There are many wonders 
In this slice of North America.
Its Declaration of Independence…

No longer counts as one. 
It’s been a long journey
Into senescence.
Meanwhile: there’s new life.

Well, I could be talking about
Democratic Socialists breathing
A little vigor into the moribund 
Body of our democracy

But I’m not that naive.
Instead, what we have here
Is a new grandchild:
Welcome Jules Rhys. 

Flesh and Blood
Mostly sleeping, but
Somehow ready
For his Future World.
