Urban Wildland

After over 250 blog posts and 300,000 words I am beginning to comprehend my purpose in writing this blog: it is to fully understand the  circumstances and consequences of my establishing a place – a house and a garden - in the urban wildland, an ecotone that transitions between the disturbed edgelands of exurbia and pristine wilderness.

The history of this particular place in California furnishes some of the back story to my being here and impacts my understanding of the broader political arrangements that exist in the United States: this at a time when we are collectively beginning to understand the global ramifications of humankind’s reign as the planet’s top predator.

So I write about the world that surrounds me, but it’s complicated. Each blog entry is an incremental attempt to build a coherent vision of an evanescent reality.

I don’t expect to complete the picture anytime soon…..
